Manual lifting technique

A warehouse worker lifts up to 18-20 tonnes per day. Correct lifting technique is therefore very important.

Try as far as possible to avoid the heaviest lifts. Obtain assistance from a colleague or lifting or moving implement for heavier lifts.

If you have to lift manually:

  • Position yourself with your feet close to what you are going to lift.
  • Bend your legs and take a firm grip.
  • Lift with your legs – keep your back straight.
  • Keep the package close to your body.
  • Put the package down by bending your knees. Keep your back straight.
